Getting to know a traditional spiritual practice
Questions that help you understand a practitioner beyond a familiar label.
· 2 min read

A search for spiritual guidance can bring up many names: traditional healer, herbalist, diviner or witch doctor. A name alone tells you little about a particular person’s work. Begin with how the practitioner describes their own tradition and the service they offer.
Ask about the actual consultation
Will the meeting involve conversation, prayer, a ritual or an item with spiritual meaning? What participation is expected from you? Ask for an explanation in words you understand before making arrangements.
Make the practical details clear
Find out the fee, any additional costs and what preparations are needed. Ask whether the conversation can happen remotely and whether any further visits are proposed. Leave yourself time to consider the answers.
Understand the limits
A spiritual interpretation is an expression of belief; it is not proof of what caused a difficulty. No consultation can guarantee another person’s choices, a legal outcome, financial success or recovery from illness.
The title used on a spiritual website does not establish medical qualifications. For health concerns, consult a qualified health professional and ask a clinician about any proposed herbal product.
Choose without pressure
You should be able to ask questions and decline a service. Take claims of certain results or demands for urgent payment seriously when deciding whether to proceed. A useful starting point is a clear explanation of the practice, its costs and its limits.
